Audience feedback

I have asked a few people from my target audience to watch my draft video so I can receive feedback before I release my final music video. This will help me to make any adjustments before the final deadline.

Harry, 17
"The cinematography is very good, the shaky camera and home video style fits well with the young and indie style of the video. The filters work well and the use of clever and aesthetic locations helped to create a nostalgic and timeless atmosphere to the video which fitted well with the love song music. The actors were good, they worked well in the scene and the song. The timing of the music and singing was good. The only thing was some parts seemed a bit too jumpy making it seem a bit too rehearsed or like a music video instead of a real event"

Nadine, 17
"I think it looks very professional"

Cat, 19
"I like the bits were the artist was walking through the forest, as well as the shots filmed in the tunnel and the bridge. I also liked the graffiti, it added to the atmosphere of the video without distracting too much from the main focus"

Becky, 17
"I liked the way you framed the shots and the clarity and depth your scenery had, as well as the way you focused and unfocused in the rhythm of the music"

Joe, 17
"I liked the shots filmed in the tunnel"

Chloe, 18
"The video has a good use of colour schemes (black and white shots) to convey the narrative. The identity of the girl is kept ambiguous to give the narrative a sense of mystery and make the audience question what has happened. I think this is a good feature of the video. There is a good use of subtle symbolism that suggests a relationship between the two characters. I also like how the ending of the video is left for the audience to decide, it is never made explicit what happened"

After looking at my feedback I found my target audience couldn't find any major flaws in my final draft. I have gone over the draft very carefully and made changes to anything that isn't quite right. This feedback shows that my music video will attract the target audience.

Updated storyboard

I have made a number of changes to my music video to get from my draft to my final copy. I have updated my storyboard to show the changes.

Switched order of shots
At the beginning of my music video there is a series of establishing shots showing the various locations used throughout the video. As I have removed all shots filmed on the wooden bridge, I also removed this shot from the beginning sequence. I therefor changed the order of the shots and added a shot of the lamppost where the end of the video is filmed.
Shots 3, 4 and 5

I removed all shots filmed on the wooden bridge as I preferred the shots filmed in different locations and felt these shots were out of place.
Shots 15, 30, 35, 69, 71, 74, and 83

I also changed a few shots to something different
Shot 13- changed from artist singing in forest to artist singing by graffiti. The original shot wasn't the quality I wanted so I found a similar shot in a different location.

Shot 52- I changed this shot from the artist singing to the artist walking under a bridge.

In some cases I felt shots were too long and didn't fit in with the tempo of the song and the rest of the shots I cut them down and added extra shots in to fill the gap.
Shot 18- I added clips of the girl

Shot 72- I added a shot of the artist leaning against a wall

In some cases I deleted shots as they didn't fit with the flow of the song
Shot 75- I removed this shot and extended the shot after.

I also added jump cuts into a number of shots
Shots 1, 14, 16, 18, 32, 34, 36, 42, 49, 52, 75, 78 and 81.

Shot changes

When originally planning my music video I decided not to show the face of the actress involved in the narrative aspect of the video as I wanted her to be viewed as a mysterious love interest however after feedback I have decided to change this idea. Most shots will still not show her face however I will change one shot to show her face. Feedback I received suggested the audience wanted to know who the girl was so I adapted my video to incorporate this. I didn't want to change the video massively as this would mean filming shots again which would have been difficult to do. All shots with the girl have also had the blurry effect removed to keep it consistent with the rest of the video. I have kept the black and white effect to show which shots are in the present and which are in the past.

Problems that occured during filming

Salcey
When filming in Salcey Forest there were a few problems. Even though we filmed on a Sunday it was still really busy and we had trouble filming on the Tree Top Walk as it is a very popular attraction at the forest. We also found that in out other location, in the forest, there were still people walking around and sometimes we had to move slightly or wait for them to pass by. We also found that after some time filming, the camera ran out of battery so we were forced to return home to charge it before continuing film.

Tunnel
One location I used to film was a tunnel under a railway track. This is a good location as it made the artist silhouetted. However there was a small problem with wind as inside the tunnel it was very windy however Sam could still hear the music and was able to play. Filming had to be paused a couple of times as we were filming on a road and we had to move for cars. However this was not too much of a problem as we could see them coming so there was no danger of injury as we had plenty of time to get out of the road.

Canal bridge
Filming at the canal bridge did not present many problems. The shots to film were very simple and we filmed quickly and moved on. The grass on the canal bank was slippery so could have been an issue but we were careful when near the canal and there were no issues. There was a few people walking along the canal but they did not disrupt filming.

Lamppost
When filming at the lamppost we had to wait until it was dark. This presented a problem as there was not enough light to see the artist. However we solved this issue by using a light to make Sam visible. We also had an issue because we were filming on a road however it was very quiet and we only had to move once for a car.

Water Tower
When filming at the water tower we had a few issues, mainly sound. As the tower is near train tracks we had a few times when trains went past and the noise made it hard for Sam to keep playing as he couldn't hear the music. It was also very windy so I had to try each shot a couple of times to make sure I had all the footage I needed. The tower is also located on a popular footpath so there were a few runners and dog walkers. They didn't affect most shots and the shots I needed for the video they didn't affect. The camera ran out of battery again but I made sure to get all the shots needed before it ran out. We had to go home and charge the battery again but this lasted us the rest of the day.

Bridge
When at the bridge we didn't encounter any problems. There was nobody using the bridge so we didn't have to stop filming. We had time to try a few different angle and also get some pictures for my digipak.

River
When filming by the river and in the field next to it we didn't have many issues. There were a few sheep in the field that we had to work around but we found an area to film in so they didn't affect the shots. When filming by the river people arrived however we were just finished so they didn't affect the shots.

Actress
Chloe, who I used for the narrative part of my video lives in Leicester and all the locations I chose were in Milton Keynes. This meant I had to find a weekend when both Sam and Chloe were available and Chloe was able to travel to the location. All shots with Chloe we did on Saturday and all shots with both Sam and Chloe and just Sam I planned to film on Sunday. However with the time I had I was unable to get all the filming I needed so I prioritised filming that included Chloe as I would be able to meet with Sam another time to complete his filming, but getting Chloe to the locations would be more difficult. I was able to film all shots with Chloe in and Sam was available another weekend to finish all the shots I needed of him.

Album mood board

Most pop albums include a picture of the artist/band on the cover. There are only some that don't fit this pattern. Such as:

I like these covers so I will take them into account when making my digipak. I will try both idea when making a digipak, a cover with the artist and one without.

Digipak and magazine advert analysis

Chosen actor for music video

I have chosen Chloe Chapman to take part in the narrative side of my music video. Chloe has experience as a dancer which I hope will add to the music video. She will be in a number of shots, both alone and interacting with the artist. Chloe will also be letting me use her camera and helping out with filming when she is not being filmed. Throughout the music video she will feature in shots however I have decided that you will not see her face. This makes her a mysterious 'love interest' in the video and will keep the audience watching to find out her identity.

Music video inspiration

Filming

I will be filming my music video from 9 October to 11 October. Saturday I will be filming all the shots with the female actor and Sunday I will film all the shots with Sam and the shots with both Sam and the female actor. I have drawn up a rough schedule for Sunday as there is a lot of filming to do in one day. This is a plan to keep on track with filming and to make sure I have time to get all the shots I need.

James Blunt music videos

1973
This music video is a very similar style to what I want my video to look like. It uses different colours/filters to show the past and the present within the video. The shots in brighter colours are shots of the past and the dull coloured shots show the present. This video is continuous, showing James Blunt walking along the path the whole way through. My music video will include a variety of locations and will use black and white and slightly blurred shots to show the 'memory' shots and everything else will be in colour to show its the present.

Stay the night
I think this video has some features I want to include in my own video. The use of manual focus is used very well and I would like to use this in my own video. I also like the use of blurry shots as it doesn't make it look unprofessional and badly filmed but adds to the video and makes it interesting to watch.

Problems with filming

When filming there will be a number of things to look out for. As the music video will be shot outdoors there will be a number of issues that could cause problems while filming.

Locations
Because a lot of the video will be shot in Salcey Forest, which is a very popular area at weekends there may be problem with people getting in shots or disrupting filming. To avoid this problem we will be filming on a Sunday when it will be quieter and in the morning as there will be less people there than if we filmed in the afternoon.

Part of the music video will be filmed in a tunnel under a railway line. As there is a road going through the tunnel we will have to be careful when filming and keep an eye on the road for any traffic. This area is not very busy so there shouldn't be many vehicles at all but I will be checking any way as it is still a hazard.

The rest of the music video will be filmed outdoors so there will be a number of hazards and problems to look out for.

Weather
I might find that on the day I want to film it is raining or windy which could make filming hard or mean I have to do it another day.

Equipment
I will be using a tripod and Nikon camera and there could be problems with this. The camera might run out of battery as we have to do a lot of filming. The tripod has small parts which could be lost, dropped or left somewhere. This would mean that filming is halted while the problem is sorted.

Injury
There could be injuries during filming. None of the locations are particularly dangerous but some involve being near roads, though in these cases they are small roads not used very much. I will also be filming by a canal which could be dangerous if we are not careful when filming.

Equipment

Tripod
I will be using a tripod for most shots to make sure they are stable and to position the camera at the correct height and angle. Some shots will not be filmed with the camera on the tripod as they are going to be purposefully shaky but majority of shots need to be stable.

Gorilla tripod
I will be using a gorilla tripod for ay shots that need to be filmed from a tricky angle where the normal tripod cannot be used.

Camera
I will be using a Nikon D3100 camera to film. This will give me the option to manually focus while filming to create blurry and unfocused shots.

Props

Acoustic guitar
This will feature throughout the music video as the artist will be playing the song. It will be included in most performance shots and there will be close up shots to show the artist playing it.

Old camera
This will be featured in the music video, in shots of the artists love interest within the narrative.

Photograph
This will be included throughout the video as it ties into the narrative and the song title. There will be shots of the love interest and the artist holding the photo and also shots of it on the ground.

Styling

Artist style mood board

This is my updated style mood board for my artist. I want to use a similar style to Ed Sheeran as he often wears jeans and t-shirts with checked shirts or a hoodie.

As I will be filming in multiple outdoor locations I will have my artist in a different outfit for each location. I will keep them similar, jeans and t-shirt paired with a shirt, hoodie or coat. The acoustic guitar will feature throughout the video.

Female style mood board

The style of the artist and video is casual so I am also using a casual style for the female involved in the narrative of the video. The outfit will stay the same the whole way through as the girl will only be involved in 'memory' shots except for one at the very end. I am including ripped jeans in this outfit as this detail is included in the lyrics of the song and I want to include this in the narrative of the video.

 "So you can keep me
 Inside the pocket
 Of your ripped jeans"

Song lyrics

Loving can hurt
Loving can hurt sometimes
But it's the only thing that I know
When it gets hard
You know it can get hard sometimes
It is the only thing that makes us feel alive

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Hearts are never broken
Times forever frozen still

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket
Of your ripped jeans
Holdin' me closer
'Til our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone
Wait for me to come home

Loving can heal
Loving can mend your soul

And it's the only thing that I know (know)
I swear it will get easier
Remember that with every piece of ya
And it's the only thing we take with us when we die
We keep this love in this photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Our hearts were never broken
Times forever frozen still

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket
Of your ripped jeans
Holdin' me closer
'Til our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone

And if you hurt me
That's OK, baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won't ever let you go

Wait for me to come home (4x)

Oh you can fit me
Inside the necklace you got when you were 16
Next to your heartbeat
Where I should be
Keep it deep within your soul

And if you hurt me
Well, that's OK, baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won't ever let you go

When I'm away
I will remember how you kissed me
Under the lamppost
Back on 6th street
Hearing you whisper through the phone,
"Wait for me to come home."
